Jenkins House & Farm at Kirkley Hill

The Jenkins House & Farm at Kirkley Hill is a historic property located at 244 East Cherry Street in Pendleton, South Carolina. Built around 1837 by Dr. William Seabrook Jenkins, a Confederate Army surgeon, the house served as both his family residence and medical office. The property, encompassing approximately nine acres, is significant for its well-preserved antebellum architecture and its association with prominent local families.

Structure: The house is a one-story, rectangular frame building sheathed in weatherboard, featuring a gable-end roof with one-story wings projecting on the right and left elevations. It includes two interior brick chimneys on the rear roof slope and a gable-end portico accenting the central entrance on the facade.

Facade: The facade has five bays arranged as AABAA, where ‘A’ represents single 9/6 windows with plain surrounds, and ‘B’ is a double door entrance with sidelights and transom, surrounded by reeded molding. The wings feature Greek fret patterns beneath the cornice and pairs of 1/1 windows. The right wing has a hip roof portico supported by plain wooden posts with a plain balustrade, while the left wing includes an exterior end brick chimney and a shiplap siding addition.

Outbuildings: The property includes several outbuildings, such as a frame gable roof structure with two single door entrances on the facade, possibly a former slave quarter.

Dr. Jenkins, after graduating from medical college in Charleston, began his practice in Pendleton in 1837, using the house as his office. He served as a regimental surgeon in the Confederate Army. After his death, the property was acquired by Dr. William W. Watkins in 1880, who also used it as his residence and medical office. The Hall family later owned the house and operated a farm on the property until recently.

The Pendleton Historic Foundation currently owns the Jenkins House & Farm and is undertaking a comprehensive restoration project. Plans for the property include transforming it into a community space featuring a traveling exhibit area, gallery space for artists, a medical history display, event space, a creekside nature trail, a community vegetable garden, and public gathering areas. The foundation is collaborating with Clemson University’s Landscape Architecture program to develop a master plan for the site.
